Director, Development

Organizational Summary: The Climate Leadership Council (the Council) is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to promote the most effective, fair, and lasting climate solutions.

Primary Responsibilities:  The Director, Development will play a critical role in advancing the Council’s mission-driven and research-based work by overseeing projects related to grant writing, recruitment, and funding. The Director is responsible for generating development strategy and executing cross-departmental efforts to attract and retain funders.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conceive and oversee day-to-day execution of development strategy for the Council.
  • Research and report on new funding opportunities; track outreach.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with funders, working collaboratively with other departments to engage potential and existing funders in meetings, events, and/or research products that align with their interests and goals.
  • Prepare internal executive briefing documents and conduct briefings for CEO and leadership team for pitch meeting. Participate in select meetings with potential funders, including but not limited to individuals, foundations and corporations. Draft compelling funder-specific materials to tell the story of the Council’s innovative work including, but not limited to, pitch decks, proposals, budgets, and emails.
  • Work in conjunction with the Writer/Editor, Office of the CEO, and the Research/Policy department to research, write, and track grants.

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience is required. Experience in a non-profit, climate-focused think tank policy institution, or foundation preferred.
  • Development and fundraising experience with a proven track record of executive support working directly with leadership on securing six- to seven-figure grants from philanthropic contributions.
  • Experience with climate change, clean energy or other environmental issues strongly preferred.
  • Expertise in project management with an ability to effectively manage across multiple departments and timelines.
  • Strategic thinker and storyteller with a customer-service oriented mindset.
  • Strong verbal and exceptional written communications, and the ability to present in a group setting.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, anticipate needs, and adjust in a changing environment.
  • Most importantly, we are seeking individuals who are highly ambitious, focused on positive outcomes, eager to work collaboratively while remaining resilient in a challenging political arena, and who operate with impeccable integrity.

Location:

Preference for the candidate to be based in DC. The Council is currently operating in a hybrid environment (3 days in office; 2 days remote).

Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience; full benefits package.
