WASHINGTON, DC – Climate Leadership Council CEO Greg Bertelsen issued the following statement regarding Supreme Court’s decision on the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority:
“Today’s Supreme Court decision limiting EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act is a further reminder that Congress is decades late in charting a national strategy for addressing the most challenging environmental issue of our time. And it is further confirmation that a price on carbon must be part of the solution.”
“Continued inaction by Congress ensures we prolong this interminable period of policy uncertainty around climate that serves no interest. It slows investments in promising low-carbon technologies, limits innovation, hinders cooperation with allies that will strengthen our hand over adversaries, and raises risks of environmental and geopolitical destabilization for future generations.”
“For decades, economists, businesses, and environmental leaders have understood that a carbon price is the single most powerful and economically beneficial policy tool to address climate change. It’s predictable, highly efficient, and it works. Done right, a price on carbon will enhance U.S. competitiveness, bolster our relationships with geopolitical allies, improve the economic conditions for low- and middle-income families, and become the most significant action in history toward addressing this global challenge.”
“Throughout the years-long debate over the EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, one thing that opposing sides have agreed on is that Congress should address this issue. We are past due in making this widely held view a reality.”
The Climate Leadership Council works with a broad set of stakeholders to promote the most cost-effective, equitable and politically-viable climate solutions.
