Public Affairs Associate

Organizational Summary:

The Climate Leadership Council (the Council) is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to promote the most effective, fair, and lasting climate solutions.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Public Affairs Associate assists with all aspects of external communications for the Council. They report to the Senior Director, Communications and Public Affairs and also works closely with the Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. The Associate will work on a team that works to break down complex climate policy topics with the goal of shaping public narratives, establishing thought leadership, and educating stakeholder audiences. Their work includes everything from media relations to events, content creation, and more.

Responsibilities include:

  • Drafting and posting social media content, assisting in the development of social media and management of the Council’s social media properties.
  • Drafting and posting website content using WordPress and maintaining the Council’s websites. Serve as a point of contact for the Council’s website vendors.
  • Tracking metric analytics for earned media, websites, and social media properties.
  • Drafting and distributing internal daily news clips.
  • Drafting content including press releases, one-pagers, op-eds and various advocacy products.
  • Providing administrative support including scheduling, project tracking and support, drafting correspondence, email and press list maintenance, etc.
  • Managing the finalization and distribution of the Nexus newsletter.
  • Providing event and program support including event planning, promotion, registration tracking and management, logistics, and event staffing.
  • Creating basic infographics and other design elements, collaborating with external designers on bigger projects when needed.
  • Conducting light research as requested to support media relations, legislative and political activity, policy analysis, and stakeholder development.
  • Performing special projects as requested by the organization’s leadership team, including the CEO and EVP/COO.


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in private sector communications, with a trade association, think tank, or firm/agency or on Capitol Hill preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task, meet pressing deadlines, anticipate needs and adjust in a changing environment.
  • Strong research, writing, and editing skills including attention to grammatical detail, clarity, speed, and accuracy.
  • Strong verbal and written communications and the ability to present in a group setting.
  • Knowledge of climate policy a plus.
  • Most importantly, we are seeking individuals who are highly ambitious, focused on positive outcomes, eager to work collaboratively while remaining resilient in a challenging political arena, and operate with impeccable integrity.


This position is based in DC in a traditional in-office setting; subject to the organization’s telework policy. Currently the office is operating in a hybrid environment (three days in office, two days remote).

Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience; full benefits package.
